Soccer Zulu began as a fledgling project when Drew Wheelan found a pair of $80.00 soccer cleats at Goodwill for $2.00. He bought them knowing he would certainly be able to find a good home for them. He slowly began to collect any cleats he could get his hands on. Wheelan graduated from the Evergreen State College in 1996 with a degree in Ornithology. In 2001 he traveled to Costa Rica where he established the Herman Institute of Biological Studies with five pairs of soccer cleats in tow. He was succesful in finding a very welcome home for his cleats with rural children. Since 2001, his travels have never been absent of soccer cleats. In 2007 he brought 17 pairs of cleats with him to South Africa. He ended up in a Zulu village where the children have an HIV rate of over 60 percent. It was a pivotal moment in Wheelan’s life.
On November 18th, 2007, he concieved the idea of Soccer Zulu, an organization that brings soccer footwear and apparel to children of impoverished nations. How can you help?Click on our Donations link for information on how you can help bring the joy of soccer to children.
